Privacy Policy

FirstChapter ("we", "our", or "us") is a baby journal app for iPhone. This policy explains, in plain language, what information we collect, how we use it, which companies help us run the app, and the choices you have. It covers the FirstChapter app and our website, firstchapterapp.com. FirstChapter is run by Solvesoft Corp., a Canadian company.

Information you give us:

• Account Information: Your email address, your name and an optional profile photo. Your password is stored only as a one-way hash, never as readable text. If you use Sign in with Apple, we also receive the account identifier Apple provides.
• Baby Information: Your child's name, date of birth, gender and profile photo. If you're expecting, we store that too, along with your due date.
• Memories: The voice recordings, photos, videos and text you add, the transcripts and AI-written journal entries made from your recordings, tags, moods, and the memory books you create. Memories can contain anything you record, including details about your child's health, sleep or feeding.
• Family Sharing: The display names, relationship labels (such as "Grandma"), roles and invite email addresses of the family members you invite, and the comments and reactions family members leave on memories.
• Feedback: Messages you send through the in-app feedback form. We attach your account email, account ID and app version so we can reply and look into the problem.

Information collected automatically:

• Device and Settings: Your push notification token and device model, your timezone, your language and region (locale), and your notification settings.
• Subscription Records: The product you bought, its price and currency, your App Store country, transaction IDs, and trial, renewal and cancellation events.
• Usage Analytics: The screens you view, the features you use, session details, device model, operating system and app version. This is linked to your account ID; it is not anonymous.
• Diagnostics: Crash reports, error reports and performance measurements, linked to your account ID.
• Sign-in Sessions: Our sign-in provider stores the IP address and user agent (a short description of your device and software) for each sign-in session.

We don't use location services, we don't access your phone's contacts, we don't use advertising identifiers, and we never see your payment card details.

• To run the app: storing and syncing your memories, turning recordings into journal entries, sharing with the family members you invite, and making memory books.
• To personalize the app: suggesting prompts that fit your baby's age and your recent activity, and resurfacing past memories.
• To send notifications and emails. You can turn most of them off in Profile → Notifications; family invitations and account emails, such as password resets, are sent when needed.
• To manage your subscription and Premium features.
• To reply to your support requests and feedback.
• To understand how the app is used, and to find and fix crashes, errors and slowdowns.

We don't use your information for advertising.

FirstChapter uses artificial intelligence to turn your voice recordings into written journal entries. Here is how this works:

• Voice Transcription: Your recording is sent to OpenAI's speech-to-text service to be turned into text. OpenAI's current documentation says this transcription service does not use your data for training and does not keep it for abuse monitoring or application state. OpenAI does not train its models on data sent through its API unless the customer chooses to opt in.
• Journal Writing: The transcript is sent to Anthropic's Claude service, together with your child's name and age, to write the journal entry. When you create a memory book, Anthropic receives only your child's name and month-by-month memory counts (for example, "March 2026: 12 memories") to write its introduction. Anthropic deletes API inputs and outputs within 30 days by default. It keeps them longer only for content flagged under its usage policies (up to 2 years) or where the law requires, and it does not use them to train its models unless the customer opts in.
• Where Results Are Kept: Your original recording and the AI-written entry are both stored in your account. You can edit the entry at any time, and deleting the memory deletes both. If the memory is in a memory book, the book keeps its own copy of the memory's title and text until you delete the book.

• Your data is stored with Supabase, on Amazon Web Services servers in the United States (AWS us-east-2).
• Supabase encrypts stored data at rest (AES-256, per Supabase).
• Data travels between your device and our servers over HTTPS (TLS 1.2 or higher).
• Photos, videos and voice recordings are stored at long, hard-to-guess web addresses (links). Anyone who has a file's link can open it without signing in. That includes the photo links in the weekly family email and the photos in shared memory books.
• Profile pictures (yours and your baby's) are less protected than other files, so please treat them as public and choose pictures you're happy for anyone to see.
• The records in our database are protected by row-level security rules, so signed-in users can only read their own data and data shared with them through family sharing. Memory books are the exception: when you share a book by link, it becomes public. Anyone who has the link can view it without an account, so treat a shared book like anything else you post publicly. You can stop sharing it at any time.

We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information. We do not show third-party ads, and we do not track you across other companies' apps or websites.

These companies process data on our behalf to run FirstChapter:

• Supabase: Database, file storage and sign-in, hosted on Amazon Web Services in the United States (AWS us-east-2). Our server functions, which pass your recordings to OpenAI and Anthropic, run in the Supabase region closest to you, which may be outside the United States. Supabase also stores the IP address and user agent of each sign-in session.
• OpenAI (speech-to-text): Turns your voice recordings into text.
• Anthropic (Claude): Writes your journal entries. Receives the transcript plus your child's name and age; for memory books, only your child's name and month-by-month memory counts.
• Sentry: Crash and error reporting. Reports are linked to your account ID (or, before you sign in, to a random installation ID) and include your device model, operating system and app version, technical error details (stack traces), and the web addresses of requests the app made. These can contain internal record IDs and, for some requests, an email address (yours or one you invited) or words you searched for. About 20% of performance measurements (such as how long the app takes to start) are also sent, and each app session sends a short health signal, such as whether it ended in a crash. Your IP address is not stored with these reports, and we don't deliberately include your journal content in them.
• RevenueCat: Subscription management. Receives your account ID (the same ID FirstChapter uses), your purchase and transaction history, your device's vendor identifier (IDFV, an ID Apple gives each developer for your device), device model, operating system, app version, locale and App Store country. It does not receive your memories.
• Apple: App Store payments (we never see your card details), Sign in with Apple, and delivery of push notifications through the Apple Push Notification service.
• Expo: Our push notification service. Receives your push token, an installation ID and the text of the notifications we send you, which can include your baby's name, memory titles, family members' names and the start of their comments.
• Resend: Sends our emails: family invitations, the weekly family email (which includes memory titles, short snippets and photo links), and copies of in-app feedback to our support inbox.
• Google (Gmail) and ImprovMX: Our support inbox is a Gmail account, and ImprovMX forwards mail sent to support@firstchapterapp.com to it. They receive the emails you send us, and Gmail receives in-app feedback together with your email address and account ID.
• Vercel: Hosts our website, firstchapterapp.com, including the pages that open shared memory books and family invites.
• Google Fonts: Our website (not the app) loads its fonts from Google.

Our website has no analytics and no advertising. Vercel and Google Fonts receive the standard information that comes with any web request, such as your IP address and browser type.

You can invite family members to your baby's journal. Invited family members can see the baby's memories, photos, videos, comments and reactions, and contributors can also add memories. You can change someone's role or remove them at any time in Family Sharing. Removing someone ends their access in the app, but it can't recall emails they have already received or anything they have saved.

The weekly family email, a recap of new memories, is on by default for you and the family members you invite. Each person can turn it off in Profile → Notifications → Weekly Family Email.

An account is only needed to join a family. Share cards (images you share from a memory) and shared memory-book links can be viewed by anyone you send them to, without an account.

You have the following rights and choices regarding your data:

• Access and Export: Premium subscribers can export from Profile → Export Data. The export is either a JSON file (your account details, your babies, and your memories' text and details) or a CSV spreadsheet (one row per memory), with links (not the files themselves) to your photos, videos and recordings. It doesn't include due dates, family members, comments, analytics, notifications or subscription records. Anyone can get a complete copy of their data by emailing support@firstchapterapp.com.
• Correction: You can update your profile, your baby's details and your journal entries at any time within the app.
• Deletion: You can delete any memory at any time, which also deletes its photo, video or recording. If the memory is in a memory book, the book keeps its own copy of the memory's title and text until you delete the book. To delete your whole account, go to Profile → Edit Profile → Delete Account. This permanently deletes your journal entries (including memories you added to other families' journals) and their photos, videos and recordings, your babies' profiles, your family memberships, comments and reactions, memory books, usage analytics, notifications, feedback, push tokens, your profile and your login. It cannot be undone.
• What Deletion Doesn't Remove: We keep purchase and transaction records for accounting, tax, refund and fraud-prevention purposes. Records held by Apple, RevenueCat, Sentry, Resend, Google (Gmail), ImprovMX and Expo follow those providers' own retention periods, and OpenAI and Anthropic follow the terms described above. Emails already sent, and anything you shared or exported, can't be recalled. Deleting your account doesn't cancel an App Store subscription; you can cancel it in your iPhone's Settings → your name → Subscriptions.
• Notifications and Email: In Profile → Notifications you can turn Daily Prompts, Memory Resurface, Weekly Summary, Family Activity and the Weekly Family Email on or off. You can also turn off FirstChapter's push notifications in your iPhone's Settings. We don't send marketing emails.
• Data Portability: You can request a complete copy of your data in a standard, machine-readable format by contacting us.

FirstChapter is designed for parents and caregivers (adults aged 18 and older) to document their children's early years. We want to be clear about how children's data is handled:

• The app is used by parents, not by children. All accounts must be created by adults.
• Parents choose to provide information about their children (name, date of birth or due date, gender, photos and memories) to use the journaling features. This information is stored under the parent's account and is controlled by the parent.
• We do not knowingly collect personal information directly from children under 13. Children do not interact with the app.
• Removing a child's profile deletes the profile and its journal entries. The photos, videos and recordings from those entries, and the baby's profile photo, stay stored until you delete your account. To remove them sooner, delete those memories one by one before removing the profile, or email us and we will remove them.
• Deleting your account deletes your children's profiles, memories and media, as described under "Your Rights".
• If you believe information about a child has been collected inappropriately, please contact us immediately at support@firstchapterapp.com.

COPPA (Children's Online Privacy Protection Act) Compliance:

• FirstChapter is designed exclusively for use by parents and guardians of young children. The app is not intended for, and should not be used by, children under the age of 13.
• We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. All data entered into the app is provided by the parent or guardian, acting on their own behalf.
• FirstChapter doesn't have its own app lock. Your phone's passcode, Face ID or Touch ID protects the app only while your phone is locked, so anyone using your unlocked phone can open it.
• Parents can delete their data at any time in Profile → Edit Profile → Delete Account within the app, or by contacting us at support@firstchapterapp.com.

If you are located in the European Economic Area (EEA), the United Kingdom, or Switzerland, you have additional rights under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and similar laws. We process your data on the legal bases of consent, contractual necessity, and legitimate interest.

• Right to Access: You have the right to request a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
• Right to Rectification: You have the right to request that we correct any inaccurate or incomplete personal data.
• Right to Erasure: You have the right to request the deletion of your personal data. You can delete your account in Profile → Edit Profile → Delete Account; "Your Rights" above explains which records we keep and why.
• Right to Restrict or Object to Processing: You have the right to request that we restrict or cease processing your personal data under certain circumstances.
• Right to Data Portability: You have the right to receive your personal data in a structured, commonly used, machine-readable format. Premium subscribers can use Export (which includes links to your media rather than the files), or anyone can email support@firstchapterapp.com and we will send a complete copy within 30 days.
• Right to Withdraw Consent: Where processing is based on your consent, you may withdraw that consent at any time. Withdrawal does not affect the lawfulness of processing carried out prior to withdrawal.
• Right to Lodge a Complaint: You have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection supervisory authority if you believe your data has been processed unlawfully.

International Data Transfers:

• Your data is stored in the United States with Supabase (on Amazon Web Services). Our other service providers may also process it in the United States or other countries.
• For transfers from the EEA, the UK or Switzerland, we rely on our providers' data processing terms, including Standard Contractual Clauses where they offer them.

To exercise any of your GDPR rights, please contact us at support@firstchapterapp.com. We will respond to your request within 30 days.

We keep your data for as long as your account is active, or until you delete it. When you delete a memory or your account, the deletion runs right away. Some records are also deleted automatically on a schedule: usage analytics after 180 days, processed notification records after 30 days, and the weekly family email log after 120 days. Purchase records are kept as described under "Your Rights". Copies held by our service providers follow their own retention schedules.

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make a material change, we will email the address associated with your account and update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. We encourage you to review this policy periodically.
